acid attacks Under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 (s 29) it is an offence to “cast or throw at or upon or otherwise apply to any person, any corrosive fluid or any destructive … substance” where this is done with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable, or otherwise cause grievous bodily harm. This is so whether bodily injury is caused or not. In 2018 concern at the rising number of such attacks in the UK led the government to make a series of changes to the Poisons Act 1972. It is now an offence to buy, import, or possess any chemical product containing sulphuric acid at above 15% strength without a Home Office licence. Professional users who require such substances for purposes connected to a trade or business do not require a licence. They must, however, report any theft or suspicious loss of such a substance.
