special hospital A hospital controlled and managed by the Home Secretary for persons suffering from mental disorder who require detention under special security conditions, because of their dangerous, violent, or criminal propensities. The term is no longer in formal use: the Health Act 1999 (amending the Mental Health Act 1983) instead refers to “hospitals providing high-security psychiatric services”. There are currently three such hospitals: Ashworth, Broadmoor, and Rampton. |
