teleworking (remote working) A form of employment in which employees use information technology to enable them to work mainly from home. The early 21st century saw an exponential rise in such working, which was further boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020. The advantages to the employer are the elimination of transport problems, reduction in office overheads, and increased flexibility. Teleworkers are distinguished from outworkers or home workers in so far as the former are typically engaged in white-collar work, as opposed to the manual tasks often performed by poorly paid outworkers. |
