ad vitam aut culpam [Latin: for life or until blame] The principle that once appointed, certain office holders can only be removed for wrongdoing. In England judges were traditionally appointed on this basis to prevent their being dismissed for political reasons (Act of Settlement 1700 art 3 (7)). For judges, retirement is now governed by section 76 of the Judicial Pensions and Retirement Act 1993. |
