education supervision order A court order, applied for by a local authority under the Children Act 1989 s 36, in respect of a child of compulsory school age whom it is felt is not being properly educated. The effect of the order is to place the child under the supervision of a social worker who will in general seek to ensure regular school attendance. It is a criminal offence persistently to fail to comply with the supervisor. If a child fails to comply the local authority might as a last resort apply for a care order.
