embracery n. The former common-law crime of attempting to influence a jury corruptly in favour of one party in a trial by promises, persuasions, entreaties, money, entertainments, or the like. By the mid 1970s the offence was considered obsolete, the conduct in question being dealt with by either perverting the course of justice or contempt of court (Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 s 51). Embracery was abolished as a separate offence by the Bribery Act 2010 (see bribery). |
