单词 Gazette
释义

Gazette
n. A publication in which the Crown lists certain statutory notices. It appeared first as the Oxford Gazette in 1665, when the court resided at Oxford, and was transferred to London the following year; as the London Gazette it has been printed on Tuesdays and Fridays ever since. It contains official announcements of, for example, awards of military decorations, appointments of judges, and the dissolution of partnerships. Similar journals are published in Edinburgh and Belfast (the latter being transferred from Dublin following the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1921). For a businessman or a lawyer the principal use of these publications is to detect those firms that have become insolvent.
