geoblocking n. The use of technological means to restrict a user’s access to certain Internet content on the basis of nationality or geographical location. This may be for reasons of copyright or licensing, to enforce local laws (e.g. against gambling), or to uphold regional price differences. The EU’s Geoblocking Regulation 2018/302 (which does not apply in the UK after Brexit) aims to prevent “unjustified” forms of geoblocking, such as those that prevent online sales to customers in another member state or that impose different prices or sales conditions on the basis of nationality, place of residence, or place of establishment. The use of technology to evade geoblocking is currently a legal grey area in most countries. |
