guardian n. One who is formally appointed to look after a child’s interests on the death of the child’s parents. Under the Children Act s 5 appointment can be made either by the courts during family proceedings, if it is considered necessary for the child’s welfare, or privately by any parent with parental responsibility. A private appointment does not have to be by deed or will but merely made in writing, dated, and signed by the person making it. A guardian automatically has parental responsibility for the child. |
