hospital order An order of the Crown Court or a magistrates’ court authorizing the detention in a specified hospital (for an initial period of six months, renewable by the hospital managers) of a convicted person suffering from mental disorder. Unless a restriction order has also been made, discharge while an order is in force may be authorized by the managers or the doctor in charge or directed by the Mental Health Tribunal. Hospital orders are made under section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983. |
