convention n. 1. A treaty, usually of a multilateral nature. The International Law Commission prepares draft conventions on various issues for the progressive development of international law. Article 38(1)(a) of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, when citing the sources of law it recognizes, refers to “international conventions, whether general or particular establishing rules expressly recognised by the contesting states.” 2.
