reserve forces The non-regular armed forces of the Crown, comprising the Royal Fleet Reserve, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve, Army Reserve (Regular), Army Reserve (previously known as the Territorial Army), Air Force Reserve, and Royal Auxiliary Air Force. They are governed by the Reserve Forces Act 1996, which creates safeguards for reservists and their employers when the former are called out or recalled into operational service. These include: a formal right to seek exemption from, or deferral of, call out or recall; financial assistance to reservists whose military salary is less than their civilian pay; payments to cover the additional costs incurred by employers when their staff are called out or recalled; and the establishment of independent Appeal Tribunals to hear appeals from reservists or employers who are dissatisfied with the Ministry of Defence’s decision on their application under any of the safeguards. The civilian employment of all reservists who are called out or recalled is protected under the Reserve Forces (Safeguard of Employment) Act 1985 and the reservist also has the protection of the Reserve and Auxiliary Forces (Protection of Civil Interest) Act 1951. |
