restorative justice
An approach to justice that focuses on the idea of repairing the harm done by a crime as opposed to simply seeking retribution. In practice this will usually mean that an offender is required to make specific restitution to the victim as well as reparation to the community as a whole. The restorative process requires that the offender should be confronted with the consequences of his actions and, where appropriate, this may involve a mediated encounter with the victim of the crime. The offender may also be required to participate in a programme of activities or interventions designed to prevent him from reoffending.
