The lowest rate of remuneration an employer may legally pay per hour. One needs to be at least school-leaving age (16 years old) to be entitled to the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and 23 years old to be entitled to the National Living Wage (NLW).

The hourly rates (correct as of 1 April 2021) are £8.91 (NLW, 23 years or older); £8.36, (aged 21 to 22 years); £6.56 (18 to 20 years), and £4.62 (16 to 17 years). Special rules and rates (currently £4.30 per hour) apply to apprentices.

Non-compliance by employers may be remedied by civil or criminal sanctions.
