parent
n. A term that can have one of three meanings: it can refer to the biological parent of a child (parentage); the social parent of a child (such as a step-parent or foster parent); or the legal parent of a child (see legal parenthood). The common law has established a presumption of paternity whereby a child born or conceived during marriage or civil partnership is the husband/civil partner’s child. Where parentage is disputed, a person can seek a declaration of parentage. |
