plea and trial preparation hearing (PTPH) A pretrial hearing held in all cases sent from the magistrates’ court to the Crown Court. If a guilty plea is entered then the matter should proceed to sentence that day, with an expedited pre-sentence report (‘stand down report’) if appropriate. Where a not guilty plea is entered, the PTPH will continue as a case management hearing. Straightforward cases will be listed for trial, and more complex cases will be listed for a further case management hearing. Rules dealing with the management of cases in the Crown Court are set out in Part 3 of the Criminal Procedure Rules and in the Consolidated Criminal Practice Direction. The PTPH replaces the plea and case management hearing. |
