preliminary hearing In cases sent to the Crown Court, a pretrial hearing in which the judge gives preliminary case management directions in relation to the service of prosecution evidence and the defence statement. A preliminary hearing is not required in all cases but may be ordered where case management issues call for such a hearing, the case is likely to last for more than four weeks, it is desirable to set an early trial date, or the defendant is a child or young person.
