quamdiu se bene gesserit
[Latin: as long as he shall behave himself well] A clause found in grants of certain offices (as that of judge or recorder) to secure the office holders in their posts so long as they shall not be guilty of abusing them. The opposite clause is durante bene placito [Latin: during the pleasure of the grantor]. Under the Act of Settlement 1701 (12 and 13 Will 3 c 2) judges hold their positions quamdiu se bene gesserint. They can only be removed upon the address of both Houses of Parliament (Article 3 clause 7). |
