reconciliation n. The coming together of estranged spouses. It is, at least formally, the general policy of the law to encourage reconciliation, and there are special organizations to help with this. Solicitors in divorce cases must certify whether or not they have discussed the possibility of reconciliation with their clients, and proceedings may be adjourned if the court feels there is a chance of reconciliation. But when divorce cases were heard under the special procedure, the court had no opportunity to judge whether there was a chance of reconciliation, and such opportunity seems even more illusory under the post-2020 regime, when there is no inquiry into whether and why the marriage broke down beyond the bare statement of that fact by one or both of the parties. |
