satisfaction n. 1. The fulfilment of a claim. See also accord and satisfaction. 2. The principle that a gift in a will may cancel, or be cancelled by, some other obligation of or provision made by the deceased. For example, a legacy to a creditor of the deceased that is equal to or in excess of the debt will be presumed to be made in satisfaction of the debt, so that only the legacy is payable. Likewise, if a testator makes a will containing a gift by way of portion and subsequently makes a lifetime portion gift to the same person, then the lifetime gift may be presumed to be made in satisfaction of, and so as to cancel, the gift in the will.
