slavery n. The prohibition on slavery or forced labour as set out in Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights is now part of UK law as a consequence of the Human Rights Act 1998. There are exceptions to this prohibition for prisoners, military service, normal civic obligations, and in emergencies. The prohibition does not extend to the imposition of having to do pro bono work as part of training as a lawyer (Van der Mussele v Belgium (1983) 6 EHRR 163).
