An event due to natural causes (storms, earthquakes, floods, etc.) so exceptionally severe that no-one could reasonably be expected to anticipate or guard against it. It may be used as a defence but is unlikely to succeed (Greenock Corporation v Caledonian Railway [1917] AC 556 (HL)). See force majeure.
