Treaty of Rome (Treaty Establishing the European Community) The treaty founding the European Economic Community (subsequently known as the European Community) and the European Atomic Energy Community (see also European Union). The treaty was signed in Rome on 25 March 1957 by its founder members, i.e. Belgium, West Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. It was subsequently amended by the Single European Act, the Maastricht Treaty, and the Amsterdam Treaty and has now been replaced (under the Lisbon Treaty) by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. |
