school attendance procedures Procedures invoked by a local authority under the Education Act 1996 to secure a child’s registration and attendance at school. A local authority must serve a school attendance order (under section 437) where it is not satisfied that a child is being educated according to section 7 of the Act. If this is not complied with, a parent commits a criminal offence punishable by a fine and, where the parent knows that his child is failing to attend school regularly, by imprisonment for up to three months. LEAs may prefer the civil option of an education supervision order. |
