ubuntu A term from the Bantu languages meaning literally “humanity, compassion” and often parsed in the light of the Zulu phrase umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, “a person is a person though other people”. It thus embodies the philosophy that community is of fundamental value and in legal contexts involves such concepts as reconciliation, restitution of equilibrium, and restorative justice arising naturally from the community, rather than being imposed from above. The concept heavily influenced the approach of the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. |
