释义 |
blockade n. The act of a belligerent power of preventing access to or egress from the ports of its enemy by stationing a ship or squadron in such a position that it can intercept vessels attempting to approach or leave such ports. A neutral merchant vessel trying to break through a blockade is liable to capture and condemnation by the captor’s prize court. A blockade is practically always carried out by a warship or warships of a belligerent, although in certain circumstances it may be effected by land batteries commanding the approach to a blockaded port. In the latter case it must be supported by a naval force sufficient to warn off innocent and capture offending vessels attempting to enter (The Circassian (1864) 2 Wall 135, 149). |
