violent offender order (VOO) A civil preventative order introduced by section 98(1) of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008; it can be made in respect of an offender where the court thinks it necessary for the purpose of protecting the public from the risk of “serious violent harm” and can be drafted in any way the court sees fit to achieve this purpose. For example, the order may prohibit the offender from going to a specified place or premises, from attending a specified event, or from having contact with a specified person. A VOO can only be imposed on an offender aged 18 or over who has received a custodial sentence of 12 months or longer in respect of a violent crime, or who has been made the subject of a hospital order or community order for such a crime. The order is imposed by the magistrates’ court on application from the police service. Breach of a VOO may result in up to five years’ imprisonment. |
