NHS Foundation Trust A type of self-governing hospital, often referred to as a foundation hospital, created under the Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Act 2003. Many NHS Trusts became foundation trusts as part of the reorganization of the Health Service following the Health and Social Care Act 2012. Foundation hospitals were intended to be accountable to their local communities and an independent regulator rather than to central government, while remaining subject to inspection by the Care Quality Commission. In recent years, however, many foundation trusts have required additional government funding, with the result that central government has regained a large degree of control. In practice, few differences now remain between foundation trusts and other NHS Acute Trusts. |
