children’s barred list A list that identifies people unsuitable for employment or voluntary work in childcare roles because of relevant previous convictions, cautions, etc. The list was previously held by the Independent Safeguarding Authority but is now held by the Disclosure and Barring Service of the Home Office. The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, essentially extending and replacing the Protection of Children Act 1999, requires that all members of certain professions (such as teachers) be checked against the list prior to employment. It is an offence for a person to apply for employment from which they have been barred. A person included on the list may appeal to the Upper Tribunal. There is a similar list that bars people from working with vulnerable adults. The children’s barred list was previously known as the Protection of Children Act or PoCA list. |
