civil injunction A court order granted against a person that requires him to do a certain thing, or to refrain from doing a certain thing, as specified in the order. Under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, civil injunctions were introduced to replace the previous system of ASBOs (Anti-Social Behaviour Orders). The main differences are (i) the ability to impose positive requirements, such as attendance at a substance abuse programme, as well as prohibitions; and (ii) the fact that a civil injunction may be applied for by a range of agencies, such as a local authority or a landlord, in addition to the police. Breach of the injunction may be punished by an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison. See also Criminal Behaviour Order. |
