documentary evidence
Evidence in written rather than oral form. The admissibility of a document depends upon (1) proof of its authenticity and (2) the purpose for which it is being offered in evidence. If it is being offered to prove the truth of some matter stated in the document itself it may be necessary to consider the application of the rule against hearsay (see hearsay evidence) and its many exceptions. |
