European Social Charter A Charter signed by the member states of the Council of Europe in 1961 that aims to protect social and economic rights, such as safe working conditions, medical assistance, vocational training, the right to work, to just conditions of work, to safe and healthy working conditions, to social welfare services, etc. The 46 European states that have ratified the Social Charter are obliged to submit reports on a two-yearly basis, examining the effectiveness with which the Charter has been implemented within their jurisdiction. Membership is restricted to democratic countries. |
