hazardous waste Any waste substance that is considered harmful to human health or the environment because it possesses one or more of 15 properties listed in the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 (as amended 2009), which implement the EU’s Revised Waste Framework Directive (Council Directive 98/2008). A list of such substances can be found in the List of Wastes Regulations 2005 (as amended 2009). There are stringent regulations governing the production, pretreatment, movement, and disposal of all such wastes and imposing a regime of monitoring and inspection. Other relevant UK legislation includes the Landfill Regulations 2002 and the Waste Regulations 2011. See also waste disposal. |
