Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) A person appointed to represent the interests of people who lack capacity (e.g. those with learning disabilities or mental health problems, including older people with dementia) under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. NHS bodies and local authorities are required in certain situations to instruct an IMCA for those who have no family or friends to represent them. The role of the IMCA is to ensure that those persons’ rights are respected and to ensure that they are represented when certain serious decisions are being made. |
