indictment
n. A formal document accusing one or more persons of committing a specified indictable offence or offences. It is read out to the accused at the trial. An indictment is in a particular form. It is headed with the name of the case and the place of trial. There is then a statement of offence, stating what crime has allegedly been committed, followed by particulars of the offence, with such details as the date and place of the offence, property stolen, etc. If the accused is charged with more than one offence, each allegation and charge appears in a separate paragraph called a count. Counts may, however, be framed in the alternative, i.e. two or more counts may charge different offences arising out of the same allegation of fact but the defendant may be convicted of only one of them.
