legal ethics Principles of morally right conduct in the legal profession. In the UK the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) publishes Standards and Regulations for its members based on a number of broad ethical principles. These are stated as acting to uphold the rule of law and the proper administration of justice; acting to uphold public trust and confidence in the profession; acting with independence, honesty, and integrity; acting in a way that encourages equality, diversity, and inclusion; and acting in the best interests of each client. The SRA also publishes detailed Codes of Conduct for both solicitors and firms, dealing with matters such as client confidentiality, use of evidence, behaviour in court, and conflicts of interest. Any breach of the Codes or the broader ethical principles they embody may lead to disciplinary action. The Bar Standards Board (see Bar Council) similarly publishes a Code of Conduct for barristers based on ten fundamental principles known as the “Core Duties”.
