national treatment standard The doctrine that a state is only bound to treat aliens and their property in the same way as it would treat its own citizens. Opposed to the international minimum standard, it is seen by its proponents (originally Latin American countries) as counteracting the attempts of economically and politically powerful Western states to use international law to impose their will on less well-developed states. Its effect, however, has been to expose foreign nationals to objectionable standards in states that regularly maltreat their own nationals. |
