remittance basis The remittance basis charges UK tax on foreign income only when the income is brought to the UK (i.e. remitted). No tax is charged on income that is kept (or spent) abroad. Foreign gains are taxed similarly. An individual resident, but not domiciled, in the UK is subject to UK income tax and capital gains tax on the remittance basis during the first six years in which he is so resident. It is possible for a taxpayer who has been resident in the UK for more than six years to elect to remain subject to UK tax on the remittance basis only, on payment of a fixed sum of tax (Income Tax Act 2007 s 809A-809Z7). The sum payable varies, depending on the number of years of UK residence. |
