parole (release on licence) n. The conditional release of a prisoner from prison. Under the Criminal Justice Act 2003, anyone sentenced to imprisonment for more than 12 months must be released on licence after serving one-half of the sentence, providing the offender is not a dangerous offender. The conditions of the offender’s parole will be determined by the Secretary of State, with advice from the probation service. Parole remains in force until the end of the offender’s sentence. If a prisoner on parole commits an offence during the period of his original sentence, he may have to serve any part of the original sentence still outstanding. In such cases limitations are imposed on his right to be considered again for parole. |
