单词 Judicial Committee of the Privy Council
A specialist committee of the Privy Council established in England by the (IMP) Judicial Committee Act 1833, consisting of the Lord President of the Council, the Lord Chancellor, former Lords President, the Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, and other members of the Privy Council holding high judicial office. It was set up to decide appeals from colonial, ecclesiastical and admiralty courts. The sittings of the Judicial Committee consist usually of three or, for exceptionally important appeals, five Lords of Appeal in Ordinary. Prior to 1 July 1997, it was the Final Court of Appeal for Hong Kong with its decisions binding on all Hong Kong courts. The right of appeal to the Privy Council from Hong Kong courts ceased on 1 July 1997. Any appeal in respect of which the Privy Council or the Court of Appeal had granted conditional, final or special leave to appeal to the Judicial Committee and the appeal had not been finally disposed of on or before 30 June 1997 would proceed in the Court of Final Appeal: Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Ordinance (Cap 484) s 49(1). See also Privy Council.
