Water Framework Directive An EU directive (2000/60 EC) that establishes a legal framework for the protection and sustainable use of lakes, rivers, and other large bodies of water. Its main aims are to improve water quality by the control of pollution, reduce the dangers of flooding and drought, and prevent the deterioration of wetlands and other aquatic ecosystems. The directive has been implemented in the UK by the Water Act 2003 and the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003. Further directives aiming to protect groundwater and to reduce the discharge of 33 “priority substances” have since been adopted at European level. |
