electronic surveillance The use of telephone tapping, hidden microphones (bugging) or cameras, or similar means to obtain evidence. Telecommunications interception evidence is normally inadmissible at trial in England but evidence obtained by other means of electronic surveillance may be admissible. The Police Act 1997 provides for a system in which independent commissioners of police oversee the arrangements and investigate complaints in relation to intrusive surveillance operations. |
