单词 European Community
释义

European Community
(EC) An economic and political association of European states that originated as the European Economic Community (EU) based upon the three Communities; renamed the EEC the European Community; and introduced new policy areas with the aim of creating closer economic, political, and monetary union between member states. The Treaty came into force on 1 November 1993; it was amended by the Amsterdam Treaty. The European Community was finally dissolved (as an entity distinct from the European Union) with the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009.

The changes in UK law necessary as a result of joining the EEC were made by the European Communities Act 1972. As part of the Brexit process, this Act was repealed on 31 January 2020 by the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, although its effect was “saved” for a defined implementation period under the provisions of the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Act 2020.

Note that not all the EU law that had or has effect in the UK was implemented through the European Communities Act. For example, the European Arrest Warrant would have been unaffected by the repeal of the 1972 Act, as it was given effect by a different piece of legislation, the Extradition Act 2003. The relevant part of the 2003 Act was amended by the European Union (Future Relationship) Act 2020.
