Family Court A new court of record for England and Wales that came into force in 2014; it was established under s 31A of the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Act 1984 as amended by s 17 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 to hear family law matters in place of the three tiers of court that previously did so (the county court, the family proceedings court, and the Family Division of the High Court). The Family Court has power to make any order that a county court or the High Court could have made were the proceedings before those courts. However, the High Court may, if it considers it desirable, make an order that proceedings at the Family Court be transferred to the High Court. The Family Division of the High Court continues to exercise exclusive jurisdiction over cases involving its inherent jurisdiction or requiring international work. |
