The Air Navigation Order 2016 for the first time created specific offences of using a laser device to dazzle or distract the pilot of an aircraft (s 225) or to endanger the safety of an aircraft in flight (s 240). In 2018 the Laser Misuse (Vehicles) Act extended this to other vehicles, such as trains, buses, and boats, and removed any requirement to show that the vehicle was endangered. The maximum penalty is now five years in prison and/or an unlimited fine. Although the UK restricts the sale of laser devices above 1 mW, there are currently no controls on imports. |
