probation officer An officer whose duties include supervising persons bound by (for example) rehabilitation activity requirements, supervision requirements, or unpaid work requirements. A probation officer advises, assists, and befriends these and others (e.g. persons who have been released from prison or are on bail) and inquires into the circumstances of offenders in order to assist the court to determine how best to deal with them. |
