telephone tapping Secretly listening to telephone conversations by interfering with the line. It is illegal except when authorized by the Home Secretary under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. In England telecommunications interception evidence is normally inadmissible at trial. In 2009 the government dropped plans to allow such evidence to be used in court. Foreign interception evidence may be admissible at trial, as may evidence of intercepted telephone calls made from a prison. See also electronic surveillance. |
