allocution
(allocutus) n. The formal procedure in which the court asks a person who has just been convicted whether he has “legal cause to show why judgment should not be pronounced against him”, or anything else to say before being sentenced. In practice, it is an opportunity for the convicted person to state any mitigating factors that might make a less severe punishment appropriate.
