A prison regime in which a prisoner is confined separately from other prisoners, either as a disciplinary or security measure, or to protect the personal safety of the prisoner or any other person. Any refractory or violent prisoner may be ordered to be temporarily confined in a special cell, but no prisoner shall be confined in such a cell as a punishment or after he has ceased to be refractory or violent: Prison Rules (Cap 234A) r 68. The Medical Officer may for the purpose of ensuring that a prisoner does not cause harm or hardship to himself or to some other person, order that prisoner to be confined in a protected room, but no prisoner shall be confined in such a room as a punishment or after he has ceased to be likely to cause such harm or hardship: r 68A(1).
