单词 Examination in chief
A witness is examined in chief by or on behalf of the party for whom he is called to give evidence: Halsbury’s Laws of Hong Kong, Vol 12, Evidence [175.248]. Leading questions are not generally permitted at this stage: Halsbury’s Laws of England, Vol 17, Evidence para 272. Examination in chief is a highly skilled exercise, requiring great tact and discretion to unfold the witness’s evidence, so far as possible in narrative form and in chronological order, without ‘leading’ him, that is, asking him questions which suggest the answers desired: Halsbury’s Laws of Hong Kong, Vol 5, Civil Procedure [90.1010]. See also Cross-examination; Evidence; Hostile witness; Leading question.
另見 Cross-examination; Evidence; Hostile witness; Leading question。
